There are a numbers of bloggers who are upset because of this seemingly innocuous feature request, a day ago Loic Le Meur wrote a blog post asking for authority-based Twitter search that would be in favor of the followers. Twelve hours later Loic writes that a small team of developers led by Jon Wheatley has launched a new service called Twitority and that is what Loic asking for.

Wheatley wrote to Loic:

“Since I read your post this morning about authority based twitter searches I’ve been frantically trying to come up with a solution with some friends. 12 hours and numerous cups of coffee later I think we’ve cracked it.
You can now perform authority based twitter searches at http://twitority.com

This wasn’t an easy task. There are some very real limitations on the twitter API so we had to hack around it a little bit to find a way to do this. This obviously isn’t an ideal solution but hopefully it will suffice until twitter implements the feature themselves.”

The service seems to be bareboned at this moment but it is still impressive because of the time it took. Users can choose from different options like “any authority”, “a little authority”, or “a lot of authority”, at this point of time it seems that “high authority” is at high setting. And because of the technology they will be able to customize the settings more.

Loic even though he initiated yesterday’s fiasco, admitted that “authority” might not be the best word for the popularity based search. But it won’t spell the end of a “democratic Twitter” and it really doesn’t matter what it’s called being able to filter users by follow count is useful and it would be a worthwhile feature.
